How important is Natural Skin Care to your health?

Have you ever thought about what your skin does for you and how important it is to your health? Taking care of your skin and the skin care products you put on it can have a major effect on your health. Your skin is a reflection of your overall general health. Many factors such as lack of sleep, hormonal swings, stress, poor diet, illness, and age can contribute to the condition and health of your skin. It can reveal your bad habits, such as smoking and excess sun exposure, even alcohol will dehydrate your skin and interfere with the body's circulation. Skin care is about prevention not just treating ailments as they arise such as eczema, psoriasis and acne.

The close relationship between the skin and the body is overlooked because the skin is seen as a separate entity. The condition of the skin is governed by many internal body functions and is the primary line of defense against disease and infection from the outside world. More has been discovered about the way the skin functions, components and structure in the last 10 years than in the last two hundred years.

What is the Skin? How does it work?
The sole function of the skin is to protect you from the outside world. It behaves like a raincoat, acting as a factory producing vitamin D, sweat, hormones, oils, wax, pigments, all substances we need. The skin eliminates and absorbs at the same time. It is a two way membrane that eliminates a number of harmful substances resulting from the metabolic activities of the intestines and liver. The skin is continuously influenced and prayed upon by environmental severities as well as maltreatments from inside our body. A healthy diet consisting mainly of fresh fruits and vegetables will provide an adequate intake of fat, proteins, vitamins and minerals, all of which are essential for healthy skin. Please read more on detoxification for more information.

Your skin is the largest organ in your body. It weighs more than any single internal organ, accounting for about 16 percent of your body weight. The skin is considered to be one of the most important organs in your body. Skin absorption is one of the major modes of chemical entry, some toxins can do more harm absorbed through the skin than through the digestive system because these chemicals lodge directly in fat cells, bypassing the liver. Some areas of the body absorb chemicals much more readily than others, including the lips, under the arms and around the eyes. Some scientists estimate that as much as 60% of what you apply to your skin reaches the bloodstream, a good example of this is birth control patches and nicotine patches.

The skin is a vary intricate micro anatomical structure, the skin is about as thick as a few sheets of paper. Within one square inch there are 650 sweat glands, 65 hair follicles, 19 yards of capillaries, 78 yards of nerves, and thousands of sensory cells, nerve endings and Langerhans cells for immunological protection. Also containing melanocyte cells and the tyrosinase enzyme responsible for producing the melanin, giving your skin its color.
There are 3 major layers of the skin:
  • The Epidermis: Contains 5 sub layers, corneum, lucidum, granulosum, mucosum, and germinative. It is a very thin layer where the Langerhans cells are located, it has 30 layers of dead skin cells. This layer of skin is where products are applied.
  • The Dermis: This layer is 5 - 7 times thicker than the epidermis and lies beneath it. Made primarily of connective tissues, collagen, and elastin, containing nerve endings, blood vessels, immune and lymphatic systems of the skin.
  • The Hypodermis: This is the thickest layer and is made primarily of connective and fatty tissues

  • Skin plays an immunological role where the Langerhans cells pick up antigens from the skin and carry them to the lymph nodes protecting the body from microorganisms. Hazardous substances that penetrate the skin barrier may induce dermal irritation, inflammation, sensitive skin, eczema, and psoriasis as well as systemically toxic effects. Many products contain ingredients that penetrate the skin deeper and quicker to achieve whatever affect the product promises, be careful about what you are applying to your skin, it can contain ingredients that may be harmful to your health and effect your biological processes.

How Important is Hydration to skin care?
Maintaining the skin's moisture is crucial in keeping the skin healthy and looking good. Most moisturizers contain ingredients that are designed to prevent water loss such as lanolin, vegetable and petroleum-based oils, and even synthetic silicone oils similar to your furniture polish. By creating a barrier on the skin these ingredients are preventing the skin's normal respiration and function by not allowing the release of toxins and waste. This barrier traps water beneath it by preventing water loss by evaporation. Now causing dirt and bacteria to become trapped blocking pores and hair follicles encouraging blackheads and acne. These types of ingredients don't moisturize they just simply prevent moisture from being lost. Good moisturizers should contain humectants, which boost the skin's ability to hold moisture. Good natural humectants are aloe vera, marshmallow, cucumber, calendula, and red sea algae. Please read more about the importance of a natural skin care regime at Bath & Body and Facial Skin Care.

To keep your skin looking healthy and moisturizes is by drinking plenty of water. Most of us are chronically dehydrated and don't consume the amount of water we should. If your lifestyle includes intaking substances like coffee, alcohol or soda you need to be drinking even more water. If your lifestyle consists of exercise you should be drinking lots of water to replenish your body. The human body is about 70% water so drink up and give your body what it needs!
