Chemicals Guidelines Natural Skin Care

Why Natural Skin Care & Organic Body Care are Beneficial?

Research has shown there may be long term, gradual effects linked to chemical ingredients in skin care products. While skin care products may not cause any immediate reaction in your body, the chemicals used in skin care care products and cosmetics are stored and accumulated in the body. Many of these chemicals associated with health hazards are being passed onto unborn children. More than 33% of all skin care products contain at least one ingredient linked to cancer. The amount of a chemical ingredients in one single product may not be enough to harm one person, but when that chemical such as parabens are in 5 , 6 or even more of the products you use everyday there is an accumulative effect of exposure that can result in health problems.

Using natural skin care products is beneficial to your health. Your skin is a major mode of chemical entry and can absorb toxins through the skin barrier. Toxins absorbed through the skin can be more dangerous to your health because the toxins lodge right into your fat cells instead of going through your digestive system through the liver which helps to filter toxins out of your body. Taking good care of your skin plays a major role in your health. To read more about the skin click here.

Distinguishing a safe skin care product such as chemical free shampoo from a product that contains harmful chemicals such as Phthalates

Over the last decade more skin care products have popped up using terms such as "natural" & "organic" somewhere on the products packaging. Just because a cosmetic product uses the words "natural" and "organic" doesn't make it safe. There is no current legal definition for the term "natural" when talking about skin care products & cosmetics. The only way to truly know if the product is safe is by reading the list of ingredients on the back.

Have you ever tried to read a label on the back of a skin care or body care product?
Most likely these ingredients will be unrecognizable and most of us can't even pronounce them. So how do we know if they are safe? By educating yourself on what chemical ingredients are harmful to your health you will become a more informed consumer and be able to purchase safe organic body care & skin care products. Please read the most common chemicals you should be aware of to help you choose safe chemical free body care products & organic cosmetics.
What Standards are placed on the Skin Care & Cosmetic Industry?
The European Union (EU) has prohibited the use of 1,100 chemicals that are known or suspected carcinogen, mutagens, or reproductive toxicants. Neither skin care products, cosmetics or their ingredients are reviewed by the FDA before they are sold to the public in the US. So far the FDA has banned only 9 chemical ingredients!
The lack of national standards is making it hard for consumers to make the right choices in purchasing a safe skin care product. Companies dedicate huge marketing budgets to promote the natural aspects of their products, but this still doesn't mean the product is safe.

Very little standards are placed on manufactures of skin care products & cosmetics.
Companies have their own in-house definition for words like botanical, natural, pure and organic. There is no national standard for these terms so these terms can mean different things from product to product. Manufactures will use more of an ingredient that is certified organic to justify the organic claim. The percentage on a product stating how organic it is only tells you that "some" of the ingredients are organic. What about the other ingredients? There could still be ingredients in that product that are harmful even though it states it is organic.

What Safety Tests are Manufactures Required to Run?
Because there are no regulations placed on manufactures by the FDA it is up to the manufacture to decide which safety tests to perform on ingredients and the finished products. Some skin care products contain contaminants as a result of manufacturing. Typically these contaminants are an unintentional byproduct of the manufacturing processes and is cheap to test for and eliminate. But companies are not required to test ingredients for contamination and they don't have to test the final product for contamination before it hits the shelf for consumer use. There has never been a definition for safety within the cosmetic industry, for the most part it has been a self-regulated industry.

Be wary of products that state they are non-toxic.
For a product to be "non-toxic" it must meet the oral toxicity standard. Acute oral toxicity says that a substance is toxic if ingesting more than 5 milligrams for each kilogram of body mass can be fatal. This only considers death as an outcome, substances that can cause cancer, birth defects, developmental effects, and hormone disruptions should also be considered toxic. If a skin care product states it is "non-toxic" it may have chemical ingredients in it that cause long term health problems. For more on definitions.
What effect are Skin Care products having on the Environment?
The use of skin care products & cosmetics is making a huge impact on the environment. The EPA has identified traces of shampoos, perfumes, antibiotics, hormones and just about every other skin care chemical in rivers, waterways, and even in some tap water samples throughout the United States. The exposure of skin care products may be more chronic than exposure to pesticides and other industrial chemicals because skin care products & cosmetics are constantly infused into the environment wherever humans lie or visit. We use them everyday of our lives and everywhere we go. By using natural skin care products we can reduce the amount of chemicals going down our drains and contaminating our environment.

"Greening" doesn't just apply to the ingredients in the products but how the products are packaged, boxed, inks, transportation, production process and leaving a zero foot print mentality with eco-friendly products. At BTrue Naturals we are doing our best to find companies that follow closely to this mentality.

What about animal testing and the effect skin care products have on animals?
Companies are coming up with new ways to test chemical substances rather than animal testing. There are initiative out there that call for funding towards animal testing alternatives, but unfortunately for now there are safety studies crucial to measuring the toxicity of chemicals impacting the environment, wildlife, and public health, for which there are no known alternative study methods. By using natural organic skin care products that use natural ingredients that don't need to be tested on animals we can reduce most animal testing. At BTrue Naturals we provide products that have no animal testing on the product itself. We believe there is no reason for skin care products, facial skin care products and cosmetics to be tested on animals.
